The Waves 04:26
Bleeding inside You'd better run and hide They're just around the bend They'll come for you, my friend You never know The lengths to which they go To break you apart Rip out your beating heart The nights disappear You wake to pain and fear Faith, honour, trust Words crumble into dust Where is the love? Below, before, above Searching for signs For diamonds in the mines Look here we are where the sea meets the land Let's dance to the song of the wind Under darkening skies we stand tall hand in hand Angels fall but the saints never sinned Open your eyes The world before you lies The sun shining bright Descends into the night Bring down the wall Listen to the call The waves wild and free Alive as you can be Look here we are where the sea meets the land Let's dance to the song of the wind Under darkening skies we stand tall hand in hand Angels fall but the saints never sinned [interlude] Open your eyes The world before you lies The sun shining bright Descends into the night Bring down the wall Listen to the call The waves wild and free Alive as you can be Look here we are where the sea meets the land Let's dance to the song of the wind Under darkening skies we stand tall hand in hand Angels fall but the saints never sinned Look here we are where the sea meets the land Let's dance to the song of the wind Under darkening skies we stand tall hand in hand Angels fall but the saints never sinned The waves wild and free Alive as you can be

Walking 05:59
you were born to sing a song of seasons of deep waters, ebb and flow of tides in between new moon and waning crescent, an insubstantial pageant, a little life and sometimes we laugh until we cry and sometimes we keep it all inside with every breath, we somehow persist all there is, all we have, is this colours fade and faces slip away the leaves soar and tumble as they land will you sit beside me, take my hand? branches of an old tree intertwined I know how you feel it's cold and dreary we just have to keep on walking I know how you feel it's late, we're weary we just have to keep on walking I know how you feel how hard it can be we just have to keep on walking will you sit beside me, take my hand? branches of an old tree intertwined in between new moon and waning crescent, an insubstantial pageant, a little life I know how you feel it's cold and dreary we just have to keep on walking I know how you feel it's late, we're weary we just have to keep on walking I know how you feel how hard it can be we just have to keep on walking and sometimes we laugh until we cry and sometimes we keep it all inside with every breath, we somehow persist all there is, all we have, is this

Wake 06:18
I'm sad and I don't know why So sad I just want to cry To make an industry out of confession Every day I wait for the little grey squirrel To dart across the electric lines Drinking my coffee, staring into space It all feels too daunting It all feels too huge It all feels too crazy Tell me, where is my refuge? I'm old and I have no toes So old, do you suppose You could give me a ride into town? Every day I see my face in the mirror Scrutinise a feature or two Looking for lasting traces of decrepitude It all feels too daunting It all feels too huge It all feels too crazy Tell me, where is my refuge? I wonder what will change What will stay the same I wonder who's to blame For daily stresses Godawful messes I hope whoever it is confesses Please don't say my name I'm rich, I know there's no need To flee from this life I lead I'll keep climbing those hills till i find I've got what it takes to give Got more than I need to live In the winter of my discontent Every day we toss, and turn and burn For hours till we fall asleep The shores recede, we're finally out to sea It all feels too daunting It all feels too huge It all feels too crazy Tell me, where is my refuge? I wonder what will change What will stay the same I wonder who's to blame The daily stresses Godawful messes I hope whoever it is confesses Please don't say my name

about

The new EP by Akhila & the Alchemists, The Waves, is meditative, eschewing playful frenzy for candid contemplation at the edge of the sea. A minimalist musical triptych removed from the bustling, carnivalesque energies of Woe Begone, The Waves is spare, hard-hitting in its authenticity, not for the faint of heart. The music lays itself bare, bringing together familiar rhythms and piercing melodies. While musically mellow and understated, The Waves unabashedly pursues the more irresolvable aspects of living such as ageing and bereavement through its lyrics, setting these against the potentially catastrophic events of the anthropocene. As a whole, the EP is pensive, steadfast, and unflinching in its desire to confront life’s most fundamental questions. It is hypnotic, fearless.

The three songs that make up The Waves–the title track, Walking, and Wake–have all been conceived and co-written by Carraway and Ramnarayan. Lyrics and vocals are by the latter, with Carraway doing the rest (guitars, drums, keys). Cellist Sam Johnson has composed, performed, and recorded the strings for The Waves (the single), while Thegn Penrose has tracked the accordion in Walking.

released October 14, 2022

The EP was recorded in Chennai and Columbus, where it was mixed by Carraway, and mastered by Brian Lucey (Magic Garden Mastering, Los Angeles). As always, alchemist Saloni Sinha's intriguingly surreal artwork adorns both single and EP covers. Emerging talent Viveka Sah (writer, visual artist) has conceptualised and animated the lyric video for The Waves (the single) in addition to crafting a range of creative collaterals for the EP. The Waves is an independent release produced by Ramnarayan, Carraway, and Bharadwaj.
